Yesterday, I survived. I survived an all day excursion in the woods with 120+ sixth graders. For all the stress and headaches the planning was, the day was quite fun and next year, I will be much more positive about the trip. I manned the trails side of the day with a couple of my fellow teachers and escorted a group in the morning and in the afternoon through several miles of trails. We figured it was a minimum of 6 miles total of hiking.
The weather was perfect. Cool in the morning, but with enough sun to keep us warm, and warmer in the afternoon but with just enough breeze to make it bearable. We didn't lose a single student, no one was hurt, and when the bell rang at 4 p.m., we were free! We've decided we are even making t-shirts to commemorate the survival!
Once I made it home, I had 7 miles of actual running on tap. I didn't think that I was too tired from all the walking, but my legs were dead by 2 miles into the run. I decided I probably could have used some electrolytes during the day instead of just the plain water I drank all day.
However, I had to keep telling myself: This is how you are going to feel during your marathon and anything beyond that distance - tired. It kept me moving, knowing that I was only making myself stronger battling through the fatigue.
I made it the 7 miles and celebrated with nachos and margaritas for dinner!
Tonight, all of the teachers are going out to celebrate the survival and completion of this trip. It is such a great feeling to have that weight lifted off of our shoulders so that we can now focus on the next task: TAKS testing. It's always something...
